The City of Janesville’s Assessor’s Office will be launching their 2025 residential property inspection process on August 19, 2025. This process will run through February of 2026.
City assessment staff will be collecting and/or verifying the physical data of properties. The data gathered during 2025 inspections will be used to make value estimates for the 2026 assessment roll. Appraisers do not set values while inspecting properties, but instead they are just collecting and verifying data for use later in the assessment process. With property owner’s permission, appraisers will complete an interior / exterior property inspection.
Assessment Staff visit properties for one or more of the following reasons:
- Follow- up inspection is needed from the prior year(s).
- New construction.
- Building permit activities that could impact property value (+ or -).
- Property transfer (sale).
- Follow-up inspection from an Open Book meeting.
- Periodic review.
- A property owner has requested an assessment review
Assessment staff first send letters to property owners requesting an inspection. Letters typically go out twice a month. If a property owner does not respond to the letter, a follow-up visit will be attempted at the property. If no one is present during the follow-up visit a yellow notice will be left on the front door stating that assessment staff where there. The notice still requests the property owner to call and schedule an appointment so, that all interior / exterior data can be verified. If no appointment is scheduled assessment staff will estimate the 2026 assessment based off of the best information available.
Assessment staff completing data collection will be wearing a city picture identification badge and will be driving a white city sedan. Anyone that is uncertain of the identity of the assessment staff can call the Assessor’s Office at (608) 755-3045 for verification before admitting him or her. General questions on the assessment process can also be directed to that number.
You can find additional information on the assessment process on the City’s website.
