Landfill Policy for Deer Disposal During the 2025-26 Hunting Season

Post Date:09/09/2025 9:08 am

With the 2025-2026 Wisconsin deer hunting season set to begin on September 13, the City of Janesville Operations Division would like to remind everyone about the guidelines for disposal of deer carcasses at the City’s sanitary landfill.  These guidelines have been established to address concerns relative to Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Wisconsin whitetail deer. The City of Janesville’s ‘Landfill Policy for Deer Disposal’ is outlined below.

The City of Janesville sanitary landfill will accept deer carcasses, regardless of the animal’s CWD status, ONLY from the following:

  1. Residents within Rock County.

Rock County residents may dispose of deer carcasses during the months of September through January during the following times: Weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and Saturdays between the hours of 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

  2. Processors, taxidermists or similar such businesses from within Rock County

  3. Commercial waste haulers disposing of deer from customers serviced in Rock, Green and/or Walworth counties only. Commercial waste haulers must currently be licensed with the City of Janesville.

Businesses and licensed commercial waste haulers must schedule deer carcass disposal weekdays between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. during the months of September through January. Landfill personnel shall be notified of the expected amount and date of disposal 24 hours or one working day in advance. Please contact Matt Robinson at (608) 755-3110 or robinsonm@ci.janesville.wi.us to schedule disposal.

PLEASE NOTE: Deer carcasses must be disposed of separate from regular waste and will not be accepted if deer carcasses are co-mingled with other waste. Licensed commercial waste haulers are asked to notify their customers accordingly. Residents processing their deer at home should not place the carcass in their trash cart. Carcasses placed at the curb with regular trash will not be collected by City crews.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding landfill disposal of deer carcasses, please contact Matt Robinson at (608) 755-3110 or robinsonm@ci.janesville.wi.us.
