The Community Services Division of the Janesville Police Department is committed to providing services that enhance safety and strengthen relationships within our community. Through dedicated programs and initiatives, the division fosters a proactive approach to public safety and community engagement.

Crime Prevention Unit

The Crime Prevention Unit focuses on enhancing public safety and fostering a secure community environment. With a proactive, community-oriented approach, the unit implements initiatives designed to prevent crime while building trust between law enforcement and residents.

Community Engagement

The unit emphasizes positive relationships with the community through open communication and collaboration.

Educational Programs

Offers workshops and seminars on topics including:

o Personal and home security

o Fraud and cybercrime prevention

o Workplace safety

o Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training

o Drug awareness and education

Youth Outreach

Develops and implements programs designed to positively engage the city’s youth, including the Bike Rodeo, Public Safety Splash Event, Shop with a Cop, and the School Resource Officer (SRO) Program.

Online and Social Media Presence

· Leverages online platforms and social media to provide educational content and community updates.

· Develops crime prevention and safety campaigns on relevant topics.

· Offers a platform for community members to ask questions, share concerns, and stay informed about local safety issues.

School Resource Officer Program

In partnership with the School District of Janesville, the department provides five School Resource Officers across the three middle schools and two high schools. The SRO Program is built on the principles of school-based policing, with officers serving in three roles: teacher, informal counselor, and law enforcement officer. The program’s goals include:

· Ensuring safe learning environments

· Providing valuable resources to school staff

· Fostering positive relationships with students

· Developing strategies to address issues affecting youth, with the ultimate goal of protecting children and helping them reach their fullest potential

Community Events

The Community Services Division hosts events that encourage connections between police and residents, including:

· Bike Rodeo

· Public Safety Splash

· National Night Out

· Junior Police Officer Event

· Shop with a Cop

Division Personnel

The Community Services Division is led by Sgt. Benjamin Thompson and includes Specialist Joseph Sanovich, and School Resource Officers Sean Jauch, Benito Rocha, Justin Popovich, Carmen Roche, and Corey Matulle.
