The Building Division oversees construction within the City of Janesville. The Division is involved in a wide range of physical planning and development review activities (see Development Review Guide). To ensure prospective developers are well equipped for developing in Janesville, the Division maintains a wide database of information to assist developers in ensuring compliance with local Zoning Ordinance requirements.

The Building Division reviews all residential building plans for new construction, additions, or alterations. For commercial construction and plumbing projects, the City of Janesville partners with E-Plan Exam for review and approval of plans. The Building Division also attends Development Assistance Group meetings with developers to review building, fire safety, zoning, and site improvement requirements for new commercial construction as well as major additions and remodels.

Building Division Inspection Staff are state certified in several trades to ensure the flexibility and timeliness of all required inspections during a construction project. The Division is also responsible for responding to complaints from citizens regarding building, zoning, and general ordinance violations.

In addition to overseeing active construction projects and the City’s ordinance enforcement, the Building Division also serves as the administrator of the City of Janesville’s Zoning Board of Appeals.
